What is Youthreach?

Youthreach is a full-time training and education programme for early school leavers aged between 15 and 20 years. It offers a flexible and dynamic programme of integrated general education, vocational training and work experience.

The main objectives of Youthreach are:

• Personal, social and educational development.
• Promoting independence, personal autonomy and a pattern of lifelong learning.
• Integration into further education and training opportunities.
• Promoting active citizenship and social inclusion.
 

There are currently three Youthreach centres in Co. Cavan, located in Cavan Town, Cootehill and Kingscourt.

What do learners do at Youthreach?

Learners set personal and educational goals that increase their self-esteem, skill and knowledge base and employability. Essential course elements include Personal and Social Development, Vocational Skills and Communications Skills.
Learners attend daily classes in a variety of different subjects.
 

How long is the Youthreach programme?

Learners are typically enrolled in the Youthreach programme for a duration of 2 years.
 

Can learners get qualifications from attending Youthreach?

Learners complete a variety of FETAC accredited modules and work towards achieving FETAC National Learning Certificates at both Level 3 and 4. For more information on FETAC please click here.

 

Do learners get paid for attending Youthreach?

Learners receive a training allowance for attending Youthreach. The current training allowance rates are as follows:


Learners aged 16 -  € 40.00 per week

Learners aged 17 -  € 40.00 per week

Learners aged 18 and over -  €188.00 per week

Weekly training allowances are fully dependent on daily attendance and participation.

How do you join the Youthreach programme?

Prospective learners must meet the relevant criteria in order to be considered for a place on the Youthreach programme. Learners must be between 15 and 20 years old and typically out of mainstream second level education for a period of three months or more. Prospective learners together with their parents/guardians must attend an interview at the centre to assess suitability for enrolment.
The first step towards enrolling is to make contact with the centre.

FETAC Level 3 and 4

At Youthreach learners engage in a variety of classes most of which are FETAC accredited.

Learners work towards completing modules in order to achieve National Learning Certificates at both FETAC Level 3 and 4.

Certificates

New learners that begin the programme at  Youthreach work towards completing eight Level 3 modules in order to achieve a FETAC Level 3 General Learning Certificate.

On completion of Level 3 modules learners progress to Level 4 modules and must complete eight of these in order to achieve a FETAC Level 4 General Vocational Studies certificate.

National Framework of Qualifications

According to the National Framework of Qualifications a FETAC Level 3 certificate is comparable to a Junior Certificate and a FETAC Level 4 certificate is comparable to a Leaving Certificate.
